Susanna Hill's Illustration Contest: Yes, you are an illustrator!

When I saw that picture book writer extraordinaire Susanna Hill was running a picture book illustration contest based on slightly off the wall fairy tales from her March Madness contest, I was intrigued. I had been following along with her blog as writers submitted their wacky version of such fairy tales as The Princess & The Pea, Goldilocks, etc. When the call came to illustrate the winning stories, I jumped at the chance. http://susannahill.blogspot.com/

At first, I was not going to submit it because I always second guess my illustrations. Are they good enough? Will I be laughed out of the picture book community? I didn't go to art school and I bet everyone else did. If you know what I am talking about, then I am here to tell you, I AM AN ARTIST + YOU ARE AN ARTIST TOO! If you love to make art, you are an artist. So go ahead and show it off to the world. Who cares if no one likes it? It's a part of you being expressed in the world. And chances are, some kid in some library somewhere who comes across the very illustration you doubted was good enough will be delighted with joy! Don't rob the world of the chance to see your work. Get it out there.

yay, your an artist...love your post and your illustration. Totally agree, if you love doing art then your an artist, no matter your age or if you've been to art school. I didn't go to art school either (wish I had) but hey. I'm having fun doing what I do...so glad you entered :)

  4. Love your post and your illustration! I love the mix and match quality to the illustration. There is so much to look at, but my eye is still drawn to the main character. Your post is so true! It reminds me of Peter H. Reynolds "The Dot Book." I am glad you are making your mark, and inspiring other people to do it too!

  5. Sallianne - Yes you are an artist!! I love the depth and the texture of your artwork here. You really pulled out the important characters - the adventurous princess and the royal dog. This illo makes me want to rethink the ending where the mean Queen and the prince just never wake up and the princess and the dog live happily ever after! (too dark??) Great work!
